The hyper-popular adult entertainer Sunny Lane chats with ASB about products, promotion, and more.
It’s the preferred cliché in the adult world that will never fall on deaf ears: the girl next door. The proverbial porn moniker that sounds more appetizing compared to its athletic distant cousin, the rookie.
Fortunately when interviewing Sunny Lane, any preconceived notions come off as atypical. Barely over five feet with features as delicate and soft as raw silk, her appeal is evident, even in this industry, in that nobody saw her coming. But they can now. Half suburban cheerleader, half hardcore intuition to please. The secret formula to make producers scramble to their HD cameras slightly faster than the observant customer looking for her films at your store.
She’s a porn star in a ballerina’s body. Or a ballerina in a porn star’s body. Just take your pick. When she speaks she is joyful about her life, vibrant towards new opportunity and unrehearsed when asked a tough inquiry. Formerly a professional ice skater and certified Yoga instructor, she’s more disciplined in Pilates than Madonna and can place her ankles behind her head faster than your imaginary girlfriend.
Originally from Florida, she has been in the industry a year now but has gained more notoriety than most girls who have been in the game longer then she; having secured constant work in both the gonzo and feature genres as well as mainstream print and the crossover gateway, the Playboy Channel. In October of last year she won the Nightmoves Award for best new star for 2005. At the time of this interview she was nominated for the prestigious AVN Starlet of the Year award. ASB: So, starting from a relative gonzo background in the industry to starring in a Nic Andrews directed thriller must have been quite a transition? SL: Well I first started with Playboy, actually. Then the gonzo thing started to take off but I always knew I wanted to more than just be limited within a certain field. I read for the part [of Jesse from Dark Angels 2] for Nick Andrews. Once I got it, he trained me very well. He’s such a great director. ASB: Considering the Andrews ‘ film, can you describe your specific challenges when working on a feature? Do your prefer that over the simplicity of being hired for a gonzo shoot? SL: Well, obviously, the dialogue comes into play when filming a feature. There really is an actually script and location shots and all that. So that can take all day. In fact, Dark Angels 2 took 11 days total [for filming]. Gonzo is just a day thing; within four to six hours you’re out of there. ASB: What are you expectations regarding your career? You’ve already accomplished a great deal in a short amount of time, have you not? SL: I came in with a business plan right from the get go. With anything I put myself up to I want to do it right. I’m an entertainer, you know. I was a professional ice skater as well as a dancer. But, really, it’s all about doing it right and making it bigger and better, hopefully. Ideally, I want to be the caliber of Jenna [Jameson] or Nina Hartley one day. But until than, I’m going to keep a positive attitude and stand behind my decisions. ASB: It’s tough in this business to do that however? Most of the time a girl will say one thing starting out but have a change of heart the following day. Jenna is Jenna for a reason is she not? SL: Oh yeah. You need to have balls if you’re going to make it this business. But you can make of it what you want of it. It is a mental and physical game at times. But never forget to be yourself and remind yourself that it can be very rewarding. The fame and the fans can be awesome. I would have never imagined that I’d be receiving email from fans in Japan or Australia or France. But I do now. Personally, I learn something new everyday from my job. [The job] is never the same. What still surprises me is that I can be so free. I’m living my dream, not anybody else’s. I’m not ashamed of anything that I do. I’m very open. The only downside came by having so much sex on screen but not enough off! ASB: Yeah, such is life. Girl, let me tell ya: I empathize. So how many features have you done? SL: Not many. Dark Angels was my first starring role. I was also in Red Light’s first feature, Dark side. I’ll be doing more. ASB: Would you consider being under a contract from a company? SL: I’m very particular with companies. But I think signing a contract can be a great experience. For me I want to keep on going until the right thing comes along. If I find a company that I like I’ll go from there. ASB: If not is there a particular company or director you’d like to work with? SL: Well, I was in the running for Jenna’s American Sex Star where fans voted for girls they liked the best and the winner was signed with her company, Club Jenna, as a contract girl. I didn’t make it but it was an awesome experience. ASB: What surprises you now? Being in the business for a good amount of time you already sensed acclimation. Is there a good story you would like to share? SL: The Dark Angels 2 party was mind blowing (editor note: please see review of party in this ASB). It was so overwhelming. I’ve been to those types of parties before but this time all eyes were on me. It was so surreal but at the same time I was happy and proud of what I had accomplished, I don’t mind saying that that night was all about me! ASB: You’re a certified yoga and Pilate’s instructor, I’m sure that goes into play when acting in your films? SL: (Smiles) Obviously, you haven’t seen enough of my movies. |
