“Everyone that knows me knows what I do. I don’t hide it all. People that know me think I’m the coolest guy around. I still think I’m a nerd.” At the recent Adult Video News Convention in Las Vegas it was all about technology, showmanship and getting the crowd’s attention. The enormous flat screens were plentiful. Each booth took their turns featuring signings of the same high profile girls. And each booth took their time acting like a cheesy bar in Panama City having girls throw t-shirts to the crowd. There were few booths that used subtle acts to stand out from the crowd. One of those booths was the booth for Old Pueblo Distribution. Old Pueblo featured red lockers with autographs and brown lunch paper bags with their logo on it stuffed with goodies to get the crowd’s attention. The scene reminded you of that out of your high school. The man behind the idea is a young 29-year-old Jewish mastermind named Arnold Stein. Even Stein was a breath of fresh air at the convention sporting his untucked black button-up shirt, jeans, black glasses and an old New York Yankees cap. “That’s the emphasis that I try to push to people is that I’m young and different and I bring a lot more to the table and it works well,” said Stein. “The biggest thing that we have is our product is different. Not to take away from the other companies; but our product is different. I only distribute movies that are exclusive to our company. If I’m going to carry you I’m going to carry you exclusively.” Old Pueblo turned two years old this month and already sports six full-time employees. “We’re still babies and we know it,” admitted Stein. But the company has already made an impact at two AVN conventions, two Erotica LA conventions and the Venus Show in Berlin. “I know we’re a niche market. At the beginning I didn’t want to carry anyone’s movies at all. But it became difficult to do because I didn’t have a lot of product. Now I do the menus, editing and box covers for movies that come to us,” said Stein. “We let the producer come up with the movie and shoot it then we clean it up and put it in a nice box for sale. “Everyone carries the big movies. We carry the movies that are a bit different. I like standing out on my own. It makes us a bit different.” Although Stein started Old Pueblo to make his own movies, he’s reduced that role to only shooting and producing an average of three movies per year. But he’s currently distributing nearly two movies each week from other producers. Although the money was difficult at the beginning, the guy that features brown lunch bags and lockers at his conventions is finally where he needs to be. “The money is getting there. I’m not worried anymore; let’s put it that way. In the last two years there was some stuggle,” admitted Stein. “But that’s business no matter what business you’re in.” The University of Arizona graduate has taken advantage of his father’s graciousness by having him handle some collections and using him at conventions. Both his mother and wife have nothing to do with Old Pueblo. The Arizona resident does admit he’s usually the center of attention at local parties with his friends. “Everyone that knows me knows what I do. I don’t hide it all. People that know me think I’m the coolest guy around. I still think I’m a nerd.” |
